REHAB

"How can architecture help change public attitudes to de-stigmatise the treatment of individuals struggling with substance abuse in Melbourne?"

"How can architectural design provide dignified experiences through co-locating people, thereby enabling the public to confront and reassess their perceptions of mental illness and substance abuse?"

Social Stigma towards mental health stems from a profound lack of understanding and fears. Such public attitudes are impacted by institutionalised treatment health facilities with negative media portrayals throughout history.

In Melbourne, the visible struggle with substance abuse along Victoria St. and the broader social stigma highlighted in cultural narratives reflect deep-seated public misconceptions about mental health.

This project explores how architectural design can influence public attitudes and help de-stigmatise treatment for those battling substance abuse. By integrating therapeutic and public environments, architecture plays a pivotal role in transforming societal attitudes towards mental health and substance dependency, fostering a more inclusive and supportive community.
